Elk Creek Garden For Kids

The Elk Creek Garden for Kids is a garden for children in the Catskill Mountains which is under development. We've obtained a southern facing property on a deadend road in a beautiful Catskill Mountain Valley in Halcott Center, NY about a 2.5 hour drive from New York City. It's within walking distance of the Catskill State Park and 6 miles from the Belleayre Ski Center. The Elk Creek Garden for Kids is structured as a non-profit organization. It has received a number of in kind donations, and is in the process of recruiting a manager and securing additional funds. We've selected Leah Kreger, a world class architect based in Brooklyn, who has a second home in Halcott Center, as the architect for the barn which will serve as the class room and equipment and teaching material storage facility. The Elk Creek Garden for Kids was inspired by the Children's Garden in the San Francisco Botanical Garden located in Golden Gate Park. The San Francisco Botanical Garden is one of the most diverse botanical gardens in the world. It features over 8000 different kinds of plants from around the world on its 55 acres. We've been fortunate to receive input from some of the most experienced and inspiring educators and farmers in New York and California for the planning of the garden, and we have received an enthusiastic response from a number of vendors who have commited resources to help this project thrive. A traditional wood fired cordwood sauna is also on the grounds of the property and is available for participants in the activities of the Elk Creek Garden for Kids and their families.
